8/7/2009 Michael Crabtree's
by Dan Cash
WKZO.COM Sports
We've all heard it:
“My adviser says
this is the best
option”. At what
point did the need
for an agent, a
manager and an
“adviser” come into
play for athletes
and celebrities? If
you've ever seen the
show “Entourage” on
HBO you know one
thing for certain
Ari Gold hates Eric
Murphy.
Eric Murphy is the
former pizza
deliveryman and
childhood friend of
uber-star Vinnie
Chase who becomes
Chase's manager. Ari
Gold on the other
end is the famous,
persistent in many
ways annoying agent
who hates the idea
of Vinnie Chase
having a manager
because as he might
say: “leave it to
the professionals”.
I bring this up for
one reason. Michael
Crabtree has
apparently enlisted
the services of his
cousin as one of his
many advisers as he
begins his NFL
football career.
Normally this would
not be a big deal.
Unless of course the
said adviser decides
to tell an ESPN
reporter that
Crabtree is prepared
and willing to sit
out the 2009 San
Francisco 49ers
football season
instead of taking
what he considers a
“sub par” rookie
contract.
Crabtree's
cousin/adviser David
Wells decided to use
a national
television outlet as
a place to tell the
49ers that
re-entering the 2010
NFL draft may be a
better option than
not getting their
contract.
Adviser statements
like that are the
reason Ari Gold
hates Eric Murphy.
Within hours
Crabtree's true
agent Eugene Parker
was working the
phones in what had
to have been an Ari
Gold running through
the halls screaming
where is David
Wells! Type way.
Parker successfully
backtracked on
everything Wells
said and I cannot
imagine Wells is
enjoying his time as
an adviser right
now.
So the question
becomes...why the
need for a title?
Hey, maybe David
Wells is a very
smart businessman
and I just don't
know it, haven't
read it, haven't met
the guy. But two
things are in play
here. Number 1
advisers can never
help. I don't care
if you are Jerry
Seinfeld advising
Kenny Banya or
Maurice Clarett
signing up with a
former rap star,
it's not going to
work out.
Most agents are
highly paid,
fantastic
negotiators with
legal backgrounds
that truly
understand what it
is that they are
doing. Athletes and
Celebrities pay them
for a single reason:
get me the most
amount of money and
perks you possibly
can.
So where is the need
for an adviser?
Crabtree is now
stuck in a bad
situation. No matter
what happens now, no
matter when he signs
he is going to come
into camp looked
upon as a prima
donna who refused to
sign on the dotted
line in time to get
into camp.
He is also going to
be looked at as the
guy who thought he
deserved more
without a single
down of NFL football
under his belt. For
practice squad
players and veterans
fighting for
positions...it's not
best to anger them.
So I implore you
former Texas Tech
Red Raider Michael
Crabtree...forget
about the more money
option of sitting
out. Dump the
adviser title from
your cousin's
business card and
forbid him from
speaking to the
media...it can only
hurt
you...monetarily and
most importantly
physically. 10/26/2008 Michigan State @ Michigan Photo Slideshow

It’s Friday morning in Lincoln, Nebraska and the Broncos are set to get into town later this afternoon. So far there is an interesting dynamic at work here before game day. Nebraska fans apparently begin arriving at the crack of dawn on Saturday and maintain positive Nebraska chants throughout.
In watching the local television stations this week I was shocked at the amount of Nebraska coverage in this market. It is Nebraska 1st, 2nd and 3rd stories for the tv crews. These guys are not only covering the game…they are covering the Huskers families their friends and exactly why it is so great to be a Cornhusker.
Lincoln appears to be somewhat of a quiet unassuming town right now…but I am told it gets out of control on game day…I’m looking forward to seeing the transformation. I was struck when arriving Thursday evening at the amount of Nebraska everywhere.
From the tv weather forecasts featuring an N on Saturdays forecast, to pictures of Nebraska-Oklahoma and Tom Osborne adorning the front lobby of my hotel room…these men and women truly bleed Huskers.
I’ll be blogging all day from Lincoln including video blogs from just outside Memorial Stadium coming before 2 this afternoon. So stay tuned to ESPN 1660.COM for the latest updates from Lincoln. 7/24/2008 Tigers Outscore Royals 32-6...
It was a bad week to be a Kansas City Royals fan. The Detroit Tigers powered their way back into the American League Central Division race knocking off the Royals 7-1 Wednesday afternoon.
Normally beating the Royals isn't that big of a deal...but we are left to consider the fact that this Detroit Tigers team is the very one that lost the first 6 to the Royals this season.
It's a huge series win...heading into a major battle with the Chicago White Sox Friday. Catch the series live on 590 KZO with coverage beginning at 6:45. 7/15/2008 It's A Little Bit Of Everything At
